Modern day equivalent to an 8800GTX

Hi folks,

I have a friend whose old 8800GTX finally died. It was perfectly sufficient for the games she plays. Funds are limited for a replacement. Can one get something in the below $100 range today that would be nearly equivalent or better? She has a decent PSU, EVGA 500W.

surely both of those are way faster than a 8800gtx. He will notice a substantial upgrade. But, i wouldnt go with a 1gb card.............

What sort of system is this going into?

The 8800gtx is a very old GPU so i am curious what the rest of his specs are?

It's the modern-day equal of an 8800GTX. All the other cards mentioned above are faster.

That being said, I'd take the 650 Ti for $60AR, linked in post #3 above. It's at least 50% faster.

128bit GDDR5, 1000MHz GK107, that's probably significantly faster than the 8800GTX, it's certainly more than enough to replace something as old as the 8800GTX

but as others have said, some $100 cards could be a better choice, specially for someone keeping the same hardware for such a long time.

The card you are thinking of is 8800GTS 512MB. 8800GT was a mid-range card outperformed by an 8800GTS (512)/8800GTX by about 50%.

That MSI 650Ti for $60 sounds like a good budget replacement or a used 7850/7870. Just make sure she installs latest drivers from the website.

Oh, I mistakenly looked up the scores of 8800GT 256MB instead of 512MB. Sorry. The card with nearly the same performance was 8800GTS 512MB/1GB, the 8800GT 512MB was slower on average than an 8800GTX, but it was an incredible value for its time nonetheless.

I would say the gtx650,having had both the 8800gts 512mb and the 650 the performance in a few old games are quite a bit better on the 650.Issue is finding one of these pretty cheap.

I guess the 750 would be good too but the 650 may be the cheapest most modern card i would look for,just keep a eye out for a good bargain and it would work.Maybe one refurbished should be cheap enough.
