The part that makes it really hard for me to buy now is even the best VA panel is going to be embarrassed by the blacks on OLED. I've got a Samsung KS8000 2016 model TV which uses about the best VA panel they make. The contrast is very good, a little over 1000:1 measured (as it needs to be to meet HDR specs). Even with it being about the best LCD tech can offer in contrast today without array backlights, it still looks horribly "glowy" side by side versus OLED.

So its tough to justify buying VA now when you know OLED isn't far finally. But at the same time VA is still perceptibly better than IPS for contrast. Basically I'm sticking with my current set up until reasonably priced OLED is available.

The Eizo FG2421 is a real gaming monitor. That one has a VA panel. Panel made by Sharp. And ghosting is supposed to be pretty minimal. More info you can find here:
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/eizo_fg2421.htm
So it's definitely possible to make a VA panel with little ghosting.
Unfortunately very few manufacturers are make VA-monitors for gamers. The only one I know of is the upcoming Acer Predator Z35.

I have this monitor. It's fantastic. After calibration I get around 4700:1 contrast. Blacks are black compared to IPS. The only quibble with it is that on default modes people reported the right inch of the screen had some extra glow on certain color shades. Though once you calibrate it you really have to be looking for the issue to notice.

Ever since I started playing games in the dark I have found my IPS monitor to be an absolute joke. I was always annoyed at the glowing corners but now it just looks atrocious.

I have also found that I have literally no use of a matte coating and it just destroys the image quality for no freaking reason now that I game in the dark.

I'll be buying a BenQ 2760HS soon. I don't think I ever want to buy a monitor with even light matte coating(which is what my current monitor has) again as it's just a stupid IQ compromise I don't know why so many people still prefer to make.

Sent from my HTC One M9

Interesting. Despite being 3 years old, the specs on this monitor could probably hold me over for OLED or a decent ultrawide. Most of my gaming is survival and Star Citizen. IPS just does not cut it, period. VA panel selection is limited and what is out there doesn't seem to have the excellent response times and lack of ghosting this old FG2421 had. Hmmm.

If you can still find the monitor for sale I would definitely go for it. OLED monitors are going to take awhile to be reasonably affordable. LG and Samsung need to get their new OLED factories online for that to happen. 2018....

It's hard to tell because our standards have surely become higher in the 3 years since it was reviewed, but TFTCentral praised this monitor for it's extremely fast response times but blasted newer monitors like the Z35 for its ghosting. I wonder how much of that is a change in expectations and how much of it is an old Sharp panel just being better than anything AU Optronics has done with AMVA recently. Going from a 24" monitor to another 24" will suck though, I'd definitely like something larger.

Why doesn't Eizo expand itself and actually become a mainstream brand? Why do they have these gems that they don't make anymore? They even had an IPS monitor without IPS glow imagine that!

And why can't other manufacturers make products like them? It's not like the PC monitor industry is price constrained or something.

Eizo is a mainstream brand, just not in gaming. Obviously they are trying to change that. They are very well known in professional circles. You do pay for their quality though. When your gaming monitor releases at $650 you tend to cut out a lot of potential customers. That VA panel is used in their multi-thousand dollar satellite imaging monitor after all. I suspect that is why all their current gaming monitors are IPS. They are still more expensive than other brands. Unless you know what Eizo is about you won't even make it to the page where their price bracket sits if you organize by price.
