As I said...I haven't subscribed to the thread. I thought I did, but I checked it out and it seems that I haven't. So I'm a little confused here.

No way, you were subscribed to it at somepoint along the way. The forums don't subscribe people, people subscribe people. This is your own fault ;).

Zuni, how's about implementing some sort of check so that that many emails don't go out? Watch the thread.. If >100 posts in 24 hours then stop sending the notification emails or something. Or maybe send email 101 that notifies the user that the subscription is being cancelled because of the high post rate (not necessarily count), and that he/she should check the website to follow the thread.

A behind the scenes improvement that may reduce the load on the SMTP server. Just an idea.

I actually don't see how it's my own fault. Yes, I might have sub-scribed to the thread, but since it wasn't there when I checked, I must have un-subscribed it. How could this be my fault that I recieve 1700 posts???. I just hope it will be fixed ;). Perry's idea seems reasonable to me. It's not too often that I recieve even 100 notifications.

Hmmm, something must have gone wrong 'cause as I said I subscribed, but did also un-subscribe it at some point in time. But I didn't know it had 1700+ threads.

I never subscribe to such stupid threads anymore, actually I don't know why I did subscribe to the thread since I just wrote one time and never looked at it again :).

Well, I learned my lesson the hard way ;)

AngelOfDeath, a quick lesson in mail servers and spooling. It doesn't matter when you were subscribed, when the subscription emails go out they are spooled, so say there were 200 users subscribed to that thread, can you imagine the size of the spool after 1000 posts? that all happened in a very short time. So yes it is your fault subscribing to a thread like that is asking to be mail bombed.
