Moderator Comments Not Making Sense?

I am still a n00b on this board and I see some threads where the moderator has made a comment on the posting by a member and it doesn't seem to violate any rules, but the comments are a bit strange, such as whacking with a fish, sailing to the moon, FBI asking for IP address, etc.

Are these just funny mod quotes that have been inserted into people's signatures, or do the moderators have some inside joke comments they make.

I just don't get it. :(

Expecting to be smacked by a baby beluga.

:)

I have no idea what you are talking about. Moderators don't make comments in threads/posts.

This is a very sad way to troll for mod quotes.

C'mon guy, you've been here for more than two years.

I may have been here for two years, but most of my posts are in the buy/sell forum. I only got posting recently in the off-topic community and my post count has gone up.

No, I am not trolling. I just see strange mod comments and was asking if there was some inside joke that I was missing....maybe some forum legends and tales that I was not privy too.

I see that smacking with a fish comment so often, I was wondering if it meant something else, because the comment made by the user is not usually anything bad or not within forum guidelines. The same with the FBI wanting someone's IP address?

Forgive me if I have offended you. :)

You want me to be banned for asking about mod comments? Wow, that's a bit harsh?

Trout slapping is OK. Seal slapping is better.

slapping someone with a trout was a famous line when Adul frequented ATOT...as well as with Geekbabe and a few other regulars.

Thanks for the information. I'll look up some of Adul and Geekbabe's threads and see how that started. Thanks for not jumping on me for asking a question.

Yeah, and Figaro is from the Bugs Bunny cartoon. The origins of fish slapping (trout esp.) are from further back than that. I think Monty Python is responsible for the original meme, but it was kind of popularized in geek culture because it was one of the built-in "/me" actions in mIRC (might have been some Usenet involvement too).

Okay. Great. It was made popular here by Adul and Geekbabe and GirlFriday mainly. Where it came from before that? Yeah...thanks for the history lesson.

Trout, particularly the large slapping kind, have a much longer history on the intertubes.
