Moderating: why the divide between some members and some mods?

What motivates you moderators? All the moderating is starting to get on alot of people's nerves. You guys are members just like me. I don't understand why you act the way you do at times when, if you were in the other guy's place you may not want it done to you.

members: is there something driving you against the moderators or something? Why do some of you hate the mods so much?

note: If you think this thread is worth locking for whatever reason, fine; but don't toast me just because I'm curious. I'm just curious. I'm not taking sides. I'm not bashing mods or members. I just want to take a peek into the minds of people here.

You extrapolate the whining of a few babies. It is meaningless. If there were REALLY a problem with the moderation, this board would not have grown to nearly 50,000 members.

It is the most popular hardware forum on the web. It didn't become so by accident.

Russ nailed it...besides they have a job too do...they are not the owners of the board...they simply are following what they have been told to do.

All I can say is that the mods don't get on my nerves. In a lot of the forums I rarely see a modded post where I have to wonder why the mod stepped in (warez, flame war, etc.).

And in OT, there is just entirely too much stupid, pointless, asinine drivel, and I don't mind if they put a stop to that either. There's a difference between stupid drivel and drivel with flair, a distinction which seems to escape some people.

They are doing their job, that's all.

<< There's a difference between stupid drivel and drivel with flair >>

That may be enough to print and tape on the door to my office. Thank you so much

🙂

There is a problem with the consistancy of the moderation. I understand that moderation is a needed evil for many reasons. The post your favorite beer thread was locked because of influence on minors, yet another beer thread continues. There are lots of topics in "off topic" that can probably be qualified as not minor safe, but only some get locked. It would be nice to see the mods act with consistancy.

there are close to 50000 members at anandtech.

thats a lot for the moderators to handle if they had to screen every topic, they are obviously going to miss some.

I have no doubt the volume of posts is high. But is seems rather odd that some topics gets nuked after a few posts, yet other post on similar topics can stay on the top for days. This is not a valid excuse in my books.

It seems that some think there is a "How To Mod At Anandtech Handbook" I think that since there is more than one person moderating this board that they may have different opinions on what should and should not be locked, nuked or let be.

I'm sure that each and every person here has looked at a thread and thought that a lock was needed even though it was let run it's course. While there are threads that you may feel were locked/nuked for no good reason. The point I'm trying to make (in my own poor grammer way) is that while one mod may take offence another may find it amusing.

My only other point is that you can't please all the people all the time. While you may feel that one thread is unjustly locked 10 others may have PMed or E-mailed to have it shut down.

That's it. I'm back to be the sarcastic nitwit I'm happier being.

As it seems to me, since it has been stated many times "that this is not democracy here", The number of PMs should not matter. Consistancy of moderation is the only fair way to do things.

The mods SHOULD have some policy guidelines to follows. From where I sit, there are none. The inconsisty in the moderation is disturbing.

I wouldn't call it "disturbing" charrison, just "irritating". They all (presumably) do what they think is right, but taste & morality being what they are, there is some variability. This is just a slice of life. Get used to it.

BTW, Russ calls this the largest HW board on the web, but I suspect it is the biggest board, period.

I will leave it at disturbing. If the mods cant come up with a consensus of what needs to be moderated, users will have a good chance of getting whacked for no apparent reason.

<< It is the most popular hardware forum on the web. It didn't become so by accident. >>

Riight..some may believe that, but I believe it's the actual members that make the forums so popular.

I beg your pardon sir. People come here because they love us mods.

Lovin' Moderator
😛

It just seems to me that they've added to the moderator ranks lately and a new equilibrium hasn't been arrived at yet. Sort of like forum growing pains or something, <shrug>.

That would be a better answer than, "it is up the judgement of who is on duty."

I assume there is such a thing as mods in training.

While I don't always agree with teh mods decisions, what do you want? The same person to moderate everything so its judged similarly. Right.......

<< Trust me, it is not the mods that bring us here! >>

Speak for yourself, I pretty much left the Hard OCP forums because of all the 13 year old kids posting dumb crap, the mods here make it better and thats why I'm here.

2 words,

Moderation standards.

Maybe that is too much to ask. The lack of moderation standards is quite visible in the forums.

just let it rest....the mods owe us nothing....including explanations as to why they locked a thread...theres a logout button...click it if u dont like the way the board is being run. these ppl do the best job they can do..if they lock threads its obviously cause its deemed innapropriate...and even if it doesnt seem that way, theyll lock a thread just in anticipation of the thread getting out of hand...nobodies perfect..including the mods of this board...so cut them some slack.

Then why bother having an "issues" forum. Saying the problem does not exist and logout is not a good answer. Thank you, but please try again.

Dont get me wrong, I am not against the moderation of the forums. But is should clear what is and is not going to be whacked. Currently, this is not the case. The moderators would probably have to work less if they were clear on this subject. Just a thought, that will probably be ignored.

charrison:

But is should clear what is and is not going to be whacked.

If you are on the boards for any amount of time, you will notice a trend. You will pick up what is tolerated and what isnt. If that doesnt work for ya, try common sense. Dont advocate violence, drug use, No links to pron., no pointless neffing, no excessive bumping, etc.

Until the Mod.s are turned assimilated into the Mod. collective, they will each have their own independant thoughts, feelings, and values. Therefore there can be no 100% definitive guidelines.

also similar threads covering the same subject concurrently also result in one being locked...have you ever experienced "the forum is experiencing heavy traffic" page? theres a reason for that...

( | ) KISSERS 😉

if the mods were gone, like @ fatwallet, I would not be weeping...

/edit (whats the trick for making multiple spaces? My (|) is too narrow)
