Modems: cheap & reliable suggestions

I am building a budget system for someone and I need to drop a modem in it.

It will have Windows 2K on it. I've heard of the WinModems which seem to be cheaper, but I was under the impression that they use more system resources. Also, I would like to have one that can run under Linux (assuming the cost difference is drastic).

Being that it's a budget system, cost is definately a concern.

Any suggestions for a reliable V.92 56K PCI Modem?

There's very few Winmodems that will work under linux. With the ones that do work, I know that there are various tricks involved which, to me anyway, is more trouble than it's worth.

I'd pick up an OEM 3Com v2977 or v2976 hardware modem. You can pretty much find them via pricewatch.com. Not as cheap as software based modem, but by no means expensive either.

OfficeMax frequently has one of their BestData modems on sale. Look on the outside of the box to make sure it is the hardware version. There are drivers included for Linux. They're like $39.99 regular price. They frequently are on sale for $10 or $15 off. Sometimes with rebates too.

Pick up this external serial modem from compgeeks.com for $16.50. That way you are 100% sure it is a true hardware modem. You should be able to find a 10% off coupon code on the net. Shipping is pretty cheap. One modem should be around $20 shipped with the coupon.
