Hey, on my modem, if i try connecting to AT&T internet, my modem makes a weird noise....you know taht click taht the modem makes when it picks up the line to dial? well, my modem does that like 10-15 times, and then i hear the "computer talk" sound. However, when i connect with DotNow, a free isp, i dont' get this, and all is silent. I have muted my modem from the control panel, but it still keeps doing this. Anyone konw what's wrong?

Delusion2001, what exactly are you doing to silence your modem? It should be a small m, m0, with a zero like this in the advanced settings.

I just go to control panel, go to modems, select my modem, go to properties, then just edit the volume bar thing

Delusion - That way doesn't always work, if you want to total mute your modem do this:

1. Doubleclick My Computer, then doubleclick Dial-Up Networking. (If a Dial-Up Networking folder is not present in My Computer, use this method: From the Start button, choose Programs, then Accessories, then Dial-Up Networking.)
2. Right-click on your connection icon and choose Properties.
3. Click the Configure button.
4. Click the Connection tab.
5. Click the Advanced button.
6. Enter this exact init string in the Extra Settings field: m0
7. Click OK to save changes.

You have to enter that exact string in order for it to work. A lower case "m" and a zero "0"

I did that, and it got rid of the computer talk sound. However, it still makes that noise when it dials (like when it picks up the line.....it does that multiple times).Oh well. I'll just use DotNow and I won't have any problems
