Hey All,

I'm giving my mom my old USR winmodem so she can get online finally and I need to buy a new on for myself.

I don't use my modem much since I have DSL. I want a basic one that can do faxes, voicemail and be used as a backup in case the DSL is down.

Have you guys had and luck with modem based voicemail???

I've been thinking about a Creative Modem Blaster but I read some negative reviews on CNET. I figured the smart people here at Anandtech might have some good ideas.

Thanks a lot.

dave.

Get the DIAMOND SUPRA SST 56K V.90 PCI DATA INTERNAL FAX MODEM W/ VOICE, available at Pricewatch for $ 21.

I'd stay away from the Modem Blaster. Performance-wise, the USR 56K message modem is the best bet, but it's pricey.

if all you will be using the modem for is the occasional fax or if your dsl goes out i suggest a noname cheap winmodem. i know they can suck but for the price you cant beat them. i have seen them as low as 10 bucks canadian (= approx. 6 bucks us).

modem blaster = suck

use the luccent winmodem or the Maxtech XPV56P(I'm not sure if this is still out, but thats what I'm using now and it works great) or the diamond supra or really any diamond modem

those are all good, the modem blaster=suck... can't stress that part enough

Got RoadRunner Cable But use the Modem Blaster for on-line Banking/Faxing/voice mailbox. Works well for the above uses / cost about $60 / the USB connection was EASY to setup compared to the tempermental WinModems.
😎

Ive had great luck with the Modem Blaster. Ive had both the I and II versions, and they're faster than most normal modems. And Ive only had problems with the Diamond Supra externals...from my experience they're peices of crap...to be avoided at all costs. And since an internal ISA Modem Blaster can be gotten from www.mwave.com for something like $30...and its fully hardware based, its not a bad deal 🙂 I normally download at 5-6kbs through napster and most good sites (after tweaking some settings)

I have cable, but i also use the DIAMOND SUPRA SST 56K V.90 PCI DATA INTERNAL FAX MODEM W/ VOICE for a backup and it works great. No conflicts.

If your not worried about lag and latency (read as online gaming), just about any old modem will do.
