Modem problems in Windows ME

Im setting up an older system, and did a clean install of ME per request. The analog modem I tried to use first had driver issues (no new driver available) and was connecting at slow speeds (Ive used that model modem on the same phone line with much faster connections previously under different OS).

I decided to try an external usb modem so I pulled the pci model (and removed it in windows)and ME detected it (a diamond usb model) ME installed its driver without ever asking for a disk. No conflicts, but it wouldnt stay connected.During the handshake I would get the message, disconnected by the remote computer even after several different numbers.

I then decided to try an exernal serial modem thinking this might save some headaches, went thru the driver install etc and now getting a message to the effect of "terminated due to hardware failure" . I also got the message, port open already. The diagnostic modem test cd I ran said the hardware was fine.

I think the problem is probably remnants of previous drivers remaining in the registry etc? Advice is appreciated if there is something I can do in the registry to delete them, and whatever else within say a half hour or so please let me know or link me the info. If its much more than that I'll try to restore to right after the OS install and start new with all those drivers and programs needed.

Thanks for any info, and Merry Christmas to all the techies! :)

Have you looked in Device Manager>modem> and "disable" any of the modems listed. Other than the one currently
trying to use. Instead of removing all modem software...
? just my .02
lol...I'm currently using an old 56k ISA modem for dialup...no difference in speed than the 56k PCI modem I burnt up.. :)
although how I managed to mess up a modem when our dial up speed is a whopping 26,400 !! I'll never know.
