USR 56k modem. Installed about 2 weeks ago. Suddenly I can't get a dial tone. Have uninstalled and reinstalled. It shows up as working ok in Device Manager.
Any suggestions?

Between the time your modem worked and the first time you could not get it to work, were there any lightning storms.
Two weeks ago I had to buy a new modem due to lightning strike. The Device Manager showed the modem to be working with no conflicts. When I pulled the line out of the back of the modem it was black!
do you have other system to try it on? I have USR myself and I never had any problem before. Try to unplug the phone cable and replug it again then connect to the Internet. See what happens.
but as suggested, try it in another computer before buying a new one or taking it back.
And tell your friend to buy a surge protector WITH phone jacks.
