I'm stumped. All drivers, etc. installed correctly, no conflicts, diagnostics sez it works fine, but "no dialtone." OS-Win 98, modem is Conextant 56K internal, phone line and cord are fine. Any thoughts???
Thanks very much.
yup, everything's in the right place, and nothing else is attached (this is my mom-in-law's computer). phone line is working, ie, i get a dialtone when the actual phone is plugged-in...i'm stumped. thanks for helping!
Can you post some of the specs of your computer and where each card is plugged into? Some motherboards require you to leave a PCI slot open under the AGP because there will be conflicts...even though it won't show up in your Control Panel. I had a few problems in the past with PCI and ISA modems, but I found that switching some of the cards around will clear up the problem. Hope this helps, and good luck.
Try going here and search for the exact phrase "no dial tone" Use anything that applies to your case. Or you could ask the question there. Be sure to give them pertinent info.
thank you, kind persons, i will follow your advice. unfortunately, mom-in-law had to take the computer back for the weekend so the rugrats could play barney and hey kitty and stuff. i noticed lotsa problems with the same modem and machine on the forum that you (Madmax) directed me to. tried a couple of my own pci's in the darned thing, but got impatient trying to load the drivers. mebbe i shall just buy her a new one. anyways, thank you to all.
not sure what you mean, gunner...the modem speaker volume? it was set on high. i did get it to dial out, but *after* it dialled, i got the "no dialtone" message. i set it so that it's not dependent on "wait for dialtone" too. i think that this is probably a lot more trouble than it's worth. a nice new modem with a nice new installation disk...
thanks again
