Modem & Port Settings

I am trying an external Elsa MicroLink 56k Internet, external modem.
It hooks to a serial port.
Question: Would it improve performance to increase the "bits per second" field, located in Port Settings of the Communications Port of the serial connector, (under Device Manager )from 9600, to, say, 56,400? My theory is, since the external modem ( even though the modem properties's bits per second is set at 115,200) runs through the serial communications port, at 9600 bps, that may be bottle necking it. If I am going about this wrong, or, if you have a better idea, please post your input. 🙂
