I have time warner cable(roadrunner) internet, I am using a SBG6580 modem and a linksys EA2700 router, up until a month ago I was getting a solid 30 MBPS down which is what my service is, now I am very up and down.
My speeds are now around 15-18 MBPS down.
The tests are done with nothing else on my network.
They do not want to deal with my router and insist that my linksys is the problem, though at times the speed does seem faster if I connect to the modem the speeds still drop at times.

So I am not sure where to start to resolve the issue. insist they come and check my line, new modem or new router. all of which I am not opposed to doing.

any help would be appreciated.

Does the modem have the download and upload speed listed? The number listed may be way different than an internet speed test. My DSL modem shows 12122/889kbps . I am paying for 12meg down. Speed tests vary widely depending on how many connections on your end and the path to the server.

Internet download speeds up to 343 Mbps and upload speeds up to 131 Mbps based on your Cable provider service
is what the modem speeds are but I am well within that..

I guess what concerns me is spending money for hardware thats not broken and is there a way to know if its
A.the lines coming in, or elsewhere from timewarner.
B. Modem
C.Router

I am not sure how to check if any of these are going bad.
I do know that when I am connected straight to modem it seems to work better, but I am not sure what the cause for that is.

Connect a computer directly to the modem (without the router) and see what speeds you get. If the results are still bad, then it's time to call the ISP to have them test the modem and the cable lines.

thanks for the replies so quickly but this is where I get stuck, I do the direct to modem and its faster but it too gets up and down speeds, though faster than through the router.

I am thinking the lines need to be checked/fixed but also could my router be going bad?
the speeds when connected to the EA2700 got to about 12-15 mbps as with the modem direct its about 20 mbps at its worst.

No I am not using the wifi on the modem, the wifi is off the ea2700. though all my tests are done via a wired connection.

Not sure what you mean by "it's faster but it too gets up and down speeds"?? Hook a computer directly to the modem with a cat5 network cable and run two speed tests. Post both tests here. Also - what speed are you actually paying for with your ISP? Not the rated speed that your modem can handle but the speed you are paying for?
