Modem-on-Hold for Lucent/Agere-based 56K v.92 modem?

My friend recently got a 56K v.92 modem with Lucent/Agere chipset. "Supports Modem-on-Hold" is stated on the outside of the box. But there was no accompanying Modem-on-Hold software. I downloaded the latest Lucent/Agere generic driver package for him, but that also doesn't have any modem-on-hold software. Can modem-on-hold be done entirely in hardware now, or does he still need to get his hands on Lucent's Modem-On-Hold software utility? If it's the latter, is there a download link for it?

MoH software: Doing MoH usually requires an extra program - applet - running on your system. In most cases, an icon will appear in the system tray when the applet is running. Exception: PCTel V.92 modems have MoH 'built-in' to the driver - a pop-up appears when a call comes in.

Not all V.92 modems are shipped with MoH software. Some modems may include buggy MoH software which needs to be updated, or may also require a modem driver upgrade. Modemsite's download area includes the latest drivers and MoH applet for Lucent/Agere V.92 'LT Win' and Soft Modems

I have never gotten v.92 MOH to work whether with Lucent or Conexant. And even when your ISP says they support v.92, they seldom support ALL the features on ALL their dial up POPs (only one of my ISP's four local numbers supports any v.92 except for quick connect). I've ended up using a Catch-A-Call box (got it cheap on eBay - don't get that Emerson box that you might see on eBay too, it's junk!). It's not as convenient, but it does work.
. There was a company that really talked up their MOH feature a while back - I think it was ActionTec or some such - hardly hear of them anymore. And you can't find any mention of MOH anywhere on their site now. And you wonder why no MOH software came with the modem...

www.zoom.com makes modems based on Agere chipsets. Apparently their drivers include the MOH stuff. You're free to try them at your own risk... 😉 You may have to do some digging to find out which one might work with your modem - match chipsets etc.

Yup, that's the brand he has. Strange how they clearly advertise it on the box, but their driver package doesn't even have the needed MOH utility. 😛

Thanks, I'll have a look. Hopefully, can just lift out the MOH application and use it with the latest generic drivers from Agere (which seem to work well). Taking drivers/utilities from all different sorts of modem brands is probably how that modemsite web site gets all the different versions of the software.

I just found some more info. If you have the original ActionTec Call Waiting modem, it wasn't v.92 and doesn't do v.92 MOH. It's an entirely local solution, while MOH involves your ISP's servers to allow a 5 or more minute reconnect time. It utilizes some second channel in one of the Lucent chipsets. I found a review of it on pcstats.com.

I had good results when using an internal PCI BestData Connexant-based v.92 modem, along with Juno/Netzero for an ISP. In fact, ironically enough, those two "free" ISPs, were the first nationwide ISPs to support MOH.

I found a deficiency in the MOH software though. There is no option for automatically disconnecting the current ISP connection when a ring comes in. I would actually much prefer that, allowing any incoming voice calls to ring through to the answering machine, instead of being force to manually answer the phone if a call comes in while I'm online.

The ActionTec v.92 modem did work, but not nearly as well as the Connexant one. The ActionTec was hardware, based on an earlier Lucent chipset design. However, I don't think that chipset is supported any more, they only really support their Lucent WinModems nowadays.
