Modem lockups

I need help with my Rockwell HCF modem. Ever since I upgraded os to xp from 98, the modem would lock up in the middle of my internet connection. When that happens I have to disconnect. But when I do try to disconnect, it would take at least 30 seonds or so to tell itself that it has disconnected. So basically, I'll have to pull out my phone line from the wall for it to disconnect from the phone. But that's only from the phone; you can still hear the static from the modem.
Finally, to get everything back to normal, I have to disconnect to reconnect again.

Please note:
Yes I have updated it to the latest driver, which was from conexant.com

This sounds to me like a driver problem. Have you downloaded the latest drivers for XP? I am running XP pro and I have to update almost all the drivers for my devices. The ones that XP has in it are crap. Can I get a witness?
