Modem issues on Win2K

Hi, a few weeks ago I posted a question about a problem with getting a modem working on my PC (K7AMA board c/w 1.4Ghz Athlon) running Windows 2000. I was told to disable 'multi link for single connections' and see if it makes any difference (unfortunately it does not).

The modem always gets detected by the OS ok and installs fine. When I dial out sometimes the modem will connect and run flawlessly but 8 out of 10 times I get 'modem failed to respond' or 'no answer' problems and something along those lines.

I have now tried three different modems - 2 different 'soft' modems (both approved for use with Win2K) and also an external modem (generic).

I originally thought it was my ISP so I have tried three different ISPs (Freeserve, Freenetname and F2S), the same problems happen with each one.

I am now starting to think it could be my onboard LAN, I will try to disable it tonight and see what happens.

I am fairly new to Win2K - could someone please go through the process of installing a modem under Win2K (not the hardware installation). I don't need to install a dial up adaptor do I?

Any advice to solve this issue would be gratefully received!

More information such as what kind of modem? internal, external, USB?

I've tried three different modems, an external V90 (it was branded MSI Mr. Modem but I have no other info than that) and 2 generic V90 'soft modems', the soft modem I have installed at the moment is detected as an Intel HaM PCI modem by Win2K.

I cannot provide any more info than that on them - sorry.

In modem properties (in control panel) go into advanced settings and then advanced port settings and try reducing the send and receive buffer settings.
