Modem/Internet problem with laptop/xircom modem HELP!

I just recently acquired a laptop (NEC Versa 6260) from my father who has used it for a couple of years for work. He has used it exclusively to connect to his network at work and never used it to connect directly to the internet from home.

Here is my problem: I am trying to set this up so I can either a) connect to my Compuserve account (no flaming please...my wife likes it🙂) or b) to connect to the WWW using IE. I am currently able to connect to COMPUSERVE but I can't get to any WWW pages! I have never had a dial-up connection (have always had cable) and have no idea what the settings should be. I entered the ip of a compuserve DNS server thinking that it was unable to translate names. I tried using IP addresses to get to WWW pages to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
