|MODEM| Internet connection keeps dropping out?

i3lueHorneT

My internet connection keeps dropping out on me, I am continually having to either go to:

Start -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection 2 (My NIC) -> Status -> Repair

Start -> Run -> cmd (dialog) -> ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew.

Manually reset the modem by unplugging/re-plugging it in

Whichever I use only temporarily seems to solve the problem. First and foremost could there be something on my computer, a virus for example, that is resetting/dropping my connection? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

peace,

Welcome to AnandTech Network Forum.

Could be Authentication. Did you change recently the computer or the computer?s Network Card?

Could be some thing wrong with the ISP side. Call them and ask them to check the connection to your Modem.

Could be something on your computer. Check for Viruses and Spyware.

Check your setting, http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify

In addition, refresh your computer?s TCP/IP, http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

Thanks for the warm welcome and reply.

No, same NIC.

They tell me the signal is strong and can't find an issue.

What do you recommend using to check? I haven't run Norton AV in quite awhile this is why I asked if there are any known viruses/spyware that would cause such a thing.
What specifically are you asking me to do on that site, I don't think I follow?
In addition, refresh your computer?s TCP/IP, http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet
Again, what is it you're asking me to do?

Thanks for all the help so far.

peace,

The link on the first page will show you how to check on your computer that your Network Card and TCP/IP are set correctly.

The second page takes you through few steps that need to be implemented to make sure that the underlying of your Network connection was not "Trashed" by Spyware or other Junk.

Update you AV and check you Hard Drive for viruses.

Download Microsoft AntiSpy and check for Spy and Adware junk.

P.S. The above is not guarantied to solve the problem but it is things that you need to do any way to avoid additional problems.

BTW. Do you use any protection, like Software Firewall?

The computer is connected directly to the modem, and I'm not sharing the connection with any other computers, I don't see anything on that page that doesn't pertain networked/file sharing computers.

Alright, I'll go through the WinSockFix program, and proceed from there.
Update you AV and check you Hard Drive for viruses.
I'm in the process of doing that.
Yes I've heard of this, hadn't yet tried it, suppose now is a good time.

Yes, I use ZoneAlarm Pro.

Again thanks for all the help.

Check your TCP/IP settings. Make sure your IP/DHCP settings are what the ISP wants them to be. What you are saying solves the problem - temporarily - is to draw a new IP address from the pool. I wonder if Cox is issuing you a new IP address and your computer keeps refusing it because it's misconfigured somehow.

You can also try reinstalling the TCP/IP stack. Let's see if I can remember the command - it's something like "netsh ip reset resetlog.txt". Try it and see if you get an error. If you get an error it means my memory's not so great. 🙂

After the connection drops, check your IP address before you try any fixes and post it here. Just post the first octet if you're worried about security, that's enough.
