Hi

I have a Dell XPS L501X with Windows 10 running. I upgraded about a month back. Suddenly two weeks back the modem has vanished.I can use my wifi but have no ethernet connection.

The Laptop says it is unable to locate the modem and asked me to install the driver by going to downloads page. But in the Dell downloads page,it says it failed to install the driver as it could not find the modem.

The Device Manager has no sign of the modem

The wifi is working fine but I have no ethernet connection.

When I try to set up new connection for Broadband it gives me the error 651

The laptop has worked well for over 3 years but this has come one suddenly. Is it something to do with Windows 10 or Kaspersky?

Can anyone help me? Thanks Megan

From what I can see at the Dell site, Dell does not support Windows 10 on your laptop. This seems to be at odds with what you are relating. Did you in fact find a Windows 10 driver for the device in question at their download site?

Product not tested for Windows 10 upgrade

Dell is not testing or developing Windows 10 drivers for this product. If you choose to upgrade, some features, applications, and connected devices may not work as expected.

Device Manager shows a "Realtek Gigabit PCI-E Network Adapter", that appears to be disabled (has a down arrow on it).

Can you click on that, and show us the Properties? It may give a reason as to why it is disabled. Also, try right-clicking on that item, and select "Enable Device", and see if it comes back.

Btw, an ethernet network card is NOT a modem. I don't know why you were trying to install modem drivers. You need to find out why your ethernet device is disabled.

I was trying to figure out the whole modem thing myself. Yet there is obviously a Tool provided by Dell to troubleshoot it. In doing a little research this morning I found references to a card that could be bought from Dell. I haven't seen a laptop with a slot for a card in so long that I can't even remember the name of the slot. A three year old laptop has one of those? Maybe it was purchased used and is older?

I'm just confused and will be interested in seeing how this plays out.

Confused as well, but I think that laptop probably has an external Conexant 56k modem (which might be what OP is referencing, based upon the drivers on the Dell website).

The Dell support site indicates the Ethernet controller is a Realtek RTL8111EL, so I think the OP can probably get a Win10 driver from Realtek at the following link (look for Win10 version 10.006 in the table; Win10 diagnostic software is listed as ver 2.0.2.11):
