you can find a lot of modems that will work with various linux distros HERE, just track down one that fits your $$ target.

I got a creative labs 56k external serial modem on sale at wal-mart for $30 USD. Seems to work ok in Windows, and Linux, too. :D

I'm using Lucent WinModem PCI (internal) with my Linux RedHat 7.3 and everything works flawlessly.

Although RedHat detected the modem, out of the box the modem didn't work properly. All I had to do is download LT Modem drivers from this page: http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heby/ltmodem/. Instructions which come with these drivers are extremely well written and it takes about a minut to install them. I was able to get LT Modem working on both my laptop and desktop without any issues.

I bought a V.92 Lucent WinModem for less than $13.00 shipped and the Firmware CD that came with it included drivers for Red Hat 6.1, 6.2, and 7.0

I had to try out about 8 drivers before I could get my Conextant HCF V.90 modem to work under Suse 8.1. Conextant do not produce linux drivers, thus I had to resort to 3rd party solutions.

The driver that worked was in fact designed for a different modem (HSF)!

But now it works great!
