I made the mistake of doing a fresh install of Win98 on my parents old machine. Now the modem won't work. The modem never installs correctly and I get the PTVCD errors too often. The modem never initializes. PCTEL D-11561V/P2A is the modem I used from my Compaq on their machine. I did reinstall two different driver packages will no luck from either. Any ideas?

Why would the driver from your machine work on theirs? You need to figure out whta make and model their modem is and get the appropriate driver.

I have all the drivers for two different modems and nothing works at getting the modem to initialize on the Win98 machine. I have no idea how to fix this now.

You try setting it to a generic modem? (56k, 33.6, whatever)....can you explain how it "never installs correctly"? also, what it a ptvcd error?

a fresh install is never a mistake!

The modem is never recognized. It never gets initialized. I have tried every PCI slot, I have uninstalled and reloaded drivers and I have even gone to the BIOS to tell it where the modem is.

Does the modem show up properly in device manager? or does it have a yellow exclamation mark?

also, what doesnt detect the modem? have you tried just normal phone dialer?

Seconding John's advice... if it shows up in Device Manager, install a generic modem driver for it and try again. If it doesn't show up in Device Manager, sounds like time to buy a new modem (although there is always the last-ditch-unplug-and-hold-the-power-button trick).
