Modem doesn't work

I have a modem with a Conexant chipst that I got in September. It worked fine in Win2000. Two weeks later, I'm off to college and I haven't used it for a really long time since I'm using ethernet. Now it's Winter Break and I'm back and have XP installed on my computer. My modem is detected, but it doesn't dial. I dont hear the click of the modem picking up. I format and install Win2000. Same problem. Problem with the modem. Port is open but doesn't dial. Any ideas?

Try to find updated drivers.

Oh yea, and the only difference in hardware setup is that I added an extra 256 megs of ram.

The new drivers wont install. I keep getting critical errors.

WHat I don't understand is why it won't work in windows 2000 anymore
