modem disconnect after 60 seconds? Why?

I built a pc for my mother and will list the specs below, however i am running into a strange issue. They are on a standard dil-up connection and form some reason every single time they go to log on the computer dials up, logs in and then 60 seconds later it disconnects. Once it disconnects and you dial again it remains connected. I have tried messing with all settings in the connection but honestly I am completely stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions?

could this be a line noise issue? Is there some mysterious setting that is hard to find that would cause this? could this be a bad modem?

system specs are as follows

XP2500 @ 3200
8rda+ rev 2.1
512 (2x256) dual channell
fx5200 vid card
standard v.92 modem

other specs escape me at the moment......

Are you using windows XP? If you are go into your DIALER properties, click the options tab and then set the disconnect to NEVER!

Do you get disconnected when checking your mail in Outlook Express? if you are click TOOLS and then OPTIONS, select the connection tag and uncheck "hang up after sending and receiving"
