Modem dialing problem

I have a cable modem, but use a regular modem to fax and dial telephone numbers from Outlook. After updating to the new Creative drivers, which didn't work for faxing, I went back to the Generic XP modem driver. Now there is a problem using my modem to dial.

As soon as it picks up the phone and starts dialing, the line immediatly returns a fast busy signal (starting right after the first tone). All I can figure is that there is a problem with the dialing tones, but don't know enough to be able to troubleshoot it.

Anyone understand this issue enough to offer some help?

Thanks!

As i understand your modem use tone dialing, not pulse, and it is correct.
1. Check your regional settings: maybe in fact you dial not a simple local number, but with something prefix. Or maybe
you FORGET to set prefix (in my office when you trying to dial without external prefix you have the same trouble).
Commonly, be sure that you dial that you MUST dial :D
Before dialing do you hear the dial tone? And it changes to busy after first digit? If so, I think, i understand your problem.
In dial settings switch off regional settings to dial only exactly number shown in the textbox. Then in the textbox type
REAL number that you usually dial as by phone.
Don't forget to reply is it help! :)

first off, do you have to dial a specific number to get line out? if no then try removing your modem from the device manager, and then having windows reinstall the drivers for it. Also when you got the drivers from creative's site, did you make sure they were for xp specifically?

After following Mitrich's direction, I found that I had added an extra "1" to the dialing sequence, so it was dialing two ones, which resulted in the fast busy signal.

Thanks for the help - I sit here red faced!
