I have a 56k external modem setup on coms port 1 under windows XP pro. My isp is Freeserve (Used to be BT i still had the same problem) The modem speed is maxed out and so is the com ports yet i can never get conenction speeds above 31.2kbps. I have the correct drivers and everything. Is this and isp problem a modem problem or bt's telephone line. Would an internal modem be any different? Thanks

It's prolly a combo of all...but I lean towards the phone lines if the station is far and you live in an older house with old lines...I have the best results here in the Country with Externals so an Internal by the same Manufacture and specs won't take care of the problem

It could be the quality of the phone line which`s my guess ,as for your ISP you could try a free one for testing purposes like UKF.NET ,it`s free to join, this will rule out your Freeserve ISP as the problem, which will only leave your modem or your phone line,my bet is the phone line, since quality of the phone line can effect connection speeds etc.

Btw what modem do you have?

More likely than not, it's the phone lines. Depending on the quality of your modem, that may be a small part of the problem, too, but it's unlikely. Going to an internal modem would probably not help.

Its a webexcel voice/fax and data modem with lots of flashy lights on! ;) I live right out in the country and to put it into perspective the telephone exchange we use isnt even enabled for broadband so the chances are its quite an old one.

In that case its about 99% chance of being the phone line, not much you can do apart from move to a new area or go broadband ,but that`s not in your area.

Yep...phone liness as I use to hit about that speed but called the phone Co. when I built the new house then had 2 exchangers put in and 8 new lines so I'm now @ 50K+ after much digging and personally putting in thicker lines within...no Broadband here either so I'm thinking Sat :(

Do not know how it goes over there but do know your taxes are heavy so open up a biz @ the address and start teaching/schooling/babysitting kids and state that the Puters used...vallah write off ;)
