modem connection problems

ok...first, here is the set up.. phone jack to phone line...phone line to splitter....one goes to one comp, one to another comp. i have these comps set up on a home network for file / print / internet sharing. here is the problem. at first i could connect through my modem fine, while the other computer didnt have his modem installed (recently upgraded), meaning he accessed the internet throug my connection. we then set up his modem, and for a while we both used that connection. now, when i try to connect, i get the connection (the little icon in the system tray), but i cant do anything...IE, AIM, outlook. i am here on his connection telling you this at the time, but would like to get my connection back. i havnt called my isp, because it isnt an isp problem (the other comp can connect to them), the modem is a Rockwell HCF 56k Speakerphone PCI Modem, found on com3. i already tried to uninstall it, (removed it from hardware list), but windows (98se) found it upon reboot, and i guess reinstalled it without asking for anything. i havnt tried fully taking it out and removing drivers. but...thats where i stand, thanks in advance for any help.

have you tried removing and reinstalling the TCP/IP protocol through your networking icon in control panel? Also it may be a DNS issue, when you are connected have you tried to ping anything? try ping yahoo.com, if that doesn't work then try ping 66.218.71.113, if that works then you will need to contact your ISP about their DNS settings. Another thing, is your friend connected to the internet at the same time as you are? That won't work on only one phone line...

i havnt tried that, ill do that here soon (the TCP or ping). as for the connection....only one of us has the actual connection, and we share using a proxy server (analog x, which seems to get the general web browsing ports for us).

If it is at all possible, remove the splitter and plug directly into the jack (remember, you have an output on your modem). I removed my Dad's and his connection speed almost doubled.
