two machines, one 98, one ME. the modems are on IRQ11 and IRQ10, respectively. however, the AOL search for a connection device at setup sees them on com1 and com3, again respectively. a buddy said to "get rid" of the com1 and com3, i assume he meant deactivate them. how do i deactivate them and will this solve my problem? is there another solution? the modems cannot be moved to com1 or com3. also, is there a way to delete account names in AOL? i know how to edit/delete access numbers, but i have found nothing to indicate deletion of account names. i think these are AOL 5, 6 or 7. and before you flame me for using AOL, i don't. these are family members' machines. i would sacrifice my left testicle before installing AhOLe on my machine. thanks in advance.

COM ports are different than IRQs. Do the modems dial or not connect properly? You never stated your problem.

well, com ports obviously indicate irq and i/o settings (com1/3 being irq4 and com2/4 being irq3). if it indicates com1 in aol's detection process, but the actual irq is 10, i would think that something is amiss. is this an incorrect assumption. and the problem is that i can't connect, but i know the modem is good. i have even deleted the drivers, rebooted, shut-down and switched the pci slot, all to no avail. thanks for your quick response, btw :)

Check if there's a conflict. Right-click my computer and click properties. Go to the "Device Manager" tab and find your modem on the list. Look at its properties, and check if it says if there is an IRQ conflict. If not, goto the rightmost tab and see if you can correct the problem manually.

been there, done that. there was nothing on irq4, so i tried to move the modem to com1, as AOL detected it, but it couldn't be moved manually. same w/second computer. i emailed aol, but no response, yet. again, thanks for your attention :) i love AT!
