modem checksum error

I have a Gateway 75mhz pentium. my modem(a us robotics 33.6 winmodem) recently quit responding. at the startup screen i get the following error message: Bad pnp serial id checksum: , device id VRRVr, seial # 56725672. The os does will no longer recognize that there is a modem in the machine. i have tried to reinstall, messed around with the irqs,tried changing settings in bios setup, moved the modem to different slots, tried a different modem, and i still can't get it to work. Any help with this problem would be appreciated.
