After many days of trying to isolate the cause of frequent random freezes on my new home built system, I have concluded that it is caused by hardware or driver problems with Creative Blaster V92 PCI Modem DI5633. When I remove the modem and uninstall the drivers in device manager, the freeze problem goes away.
Has anyone here had a similar experience? The newest drivers on the Blaster Site are from 11/2001 and when I installed them, I got the XP warning about non windows approved software. The blaster site claims the drivers are for XP. I left a lengthy message there for their tech support, but would appreciate any input from you guys.
Thanks,

install the drivers even though you get that nice little security warning window

Dialup in general can bring any computer out there to a crawl so it could be something else partially affecting your computer too.

My computer didn't slow down. The modem worked fine, I got a good 50.6 connection. However, when the modem is in, I get frequent (several times per hour) random freezes. When the modem is out , I can work and play on the computer to my hearts content with nairy a burp. My video card is incredible!!!! Video in is great from a VCR I have attached. DVD works fine with WinDVD. I am really. really pleased with all my components, with the exception of the modem. Big Deal.
I did install the drivers from the blaster site. The newest ones are dated 11/01. I get freeze ups. I get freeze up unless I physically remove the modem. If I just uninstall the drivers, XP, on the next reboot will quietly recongize the modem and install drivers. So, unless I hear something positive from Blaster, I shall just by another modem from newegg.

If you hit control-alt-delete, you will see the task manager. Go to processes (if on an NT OS).

Look at some of the stuff that loaded. It's been so long so I don't remember what the programs are called (try finding them with the modem uninstalled) but they actually monitor winmodems (which is what you have) and add features to the modem, which are usually useless. I would end the tasks or rem them out of your startup or registry.

When the computer does it freeze, I can not do a cntl+alt+del. I can't do anything except push the restart button. And sometimes after a restart, the thing freezes again as soon as my desk top comes into view. Othertimes it freezes while the blue welcome screen is showing. But like I said, I'm not having any problems at all, as long as the modem is physically removed from the box. Very curious indeed. I'm going to get an ArchTek SmartLink 56K V.92 PCI MODEM, model # 5634PRS-PCI from newegg. $15.00 shipping included. We'll see what happens when I install it. Any more input is welcome.
thanks
