I recently installed a new SUPRAEXPRESS 56K V.90 DT/FX/SPKR Modem in an old 486DX 66MHz Packard Bell computer with 20MB RAM running Win95 to replace a failing integrated modem.
Sometimes, when the system boots up and you try to connect to the Internet, or perform modem diagnostics, Windows reports the com port is already open and the modem is not able to be used.
In an effort to rid the system of old software and reduce conflicts, I did a clean install of Win98SE. The modem was installed successfully but the same problem randomly occurs. I have changed the com port assignments through the BIOS several times, switched ISA slots, and installed an updated driver. I have also uninstalled the sound card, which was for a while experiencing an interrupt request conflict with the modem. I couldn't physically remove it since the CD-ROM drive controller is integrated on it (its an old proprietary non IDE technology). I did remove the little internal serial modem...
Any ideas on what's causing this problem or how to fix it?
