modem and com port problem

i asked the question in a earlier thread, but does any one know how i can force the com port setting from com5 to com 1 or 2. there is an old dos software that can only run off of either com 1 or com2, but my internal modem has been installing on com5, no matter what i do. i tried going to bios to disable com1 or com2, but it still sets the modem at com5. any help would be great!

With the MB com ports disabled, win9x is likely assigning I/O and IRQ that is used by one of those ports (3F8 and IRQ4 for com1, and 2F8 and IRQ3 for com2) - or you might be able to change them in device mgr to one of those sets. In the DOS program, try giving it com1 or com2, whichever matches the win9x resource settings.

If your Modem is PCI in addition to what Obenton said, you might also need to force the Slot to Legacy ISA device on the specified IRQ.
