Model M keyboard!

The last piece of my new computer arrived today, a late 1991 IBM Model M keyboard. It's a genuine IBM piece, not the later Lexmark version. I just love this thing, it's a blast to type on, excellent feel and it just plain looks right. Plus it's still infinitely more solid than the brand new Dell keyboard that I just got at work (walked in this morning to a brand-new computer in my cube, it was a nice surprise).

New keyboards suck. Model M clicky keyboard all the way.

clicky keyboards are great because you get two clicks per push, making you sound like an insanely fast typist =)

it gets agitating after a while... especially if you type 95wpm+

quiet keys allow for faster typing anyway. I can type fastest on a laptop keyboard because there's little pop-action.

They're generally worth at least $25/each on eBay. More if you can target your audience. The company that makes a clone of the inferior Lexmark version sells them new for just over $50, and I've seen genuine IBM parts (one way to tell is that the IBM's have a detachable cord and no drainage holes, while the Lexmarks have drainage holes and the cord it permanently attached) go for $45 or $50 on eBay.

That said, I got mine for $16 because I got lucky.

It's a niche market thing though. There is definitely a dedicated market out there for them and for those people nothing else will do, but it's not a huge market.

It's kind of like how Selectric typwriters still command a couple hundred bucks if they're in good shape and you find the right buyers who know what they're getting.

I've never been that way. I need the tactile feedback of the buckling spring keys on the Model M and rubber dome keyboards just don't provide that.

I've already got mine. I don't care if he makes a profit. 😛

I type faster with the clicky keys. Maybe it's psychosomatic, but maybe the stronger bounce-back makes it easier for the fingers to move off the key and go to another.

Dang. Just checked and mine is a Lexmark made one (don't currently use it as I much prefer a natural keyboard now). Eh, can't complain since its brand new and I paid $1 for it. Gotta love swapmeets.

I don't know which model it is, but, I have an IBM PS2 keyboard, same as described except without the click feedback, which is what I prefer. [edit]Checked and it's manuf. by lexmark, but that was back when IBM pwn3d Lexmark, so, I still consider it IBM.[/edit] Otherwise, the click model sounds like a machine gun when I type, gets annoying to others, or so I've been told.

The silent one works the same and is less annoying, so, all is good. I've gotten used to typing on my thinkpad keyboard (for the most part) so I don't use the PC that much. Still, when I need to do some serious typing the desktop keyboard is the way to go.

is it that new small form factor dell keyboard? i'm still interested in buying one of those.

We use those at work. I like them. They have almost no action, so not good for the clicky keys people, but I can type like crazy on them.

I just got one of those at work. It sucks. The keys have no feel and the overall size is just too small. Plus is has those damn windows keys.
