Modding Xbox Headset??

So I think the Xbox head sets a uber comfortable and cool looking. I want to rewire it adding some improvements. The first problem is that the jack is tiny. Smaller than 1/8", also the earpiece and mic boom go to that tiny stereo plug, implying both are mono, which is fine. If I seperate them for a computer input, will a mono plug work in the plugs meant for stereo connections, my instincts say yes, but creative labs is dumb sometimes. Also there is this little nodule on the cord, what is it? just an organizer or is there a resistor in it? Then I would like to add a mic mute and speaker volume control to the wire. Tips or prior work you can point me to?
