Modding an antec 900...

Hey guys,

I don't really like the slant on top of the Antec 900 case due to the 200mm fan. I'd rather the top of the case be flat like other cases. I saw this pic, and it looks like Nvidia has an Antec 900 with a flat top section:

Does anyone have any ideas how to achieve that look? Is it possible to mount the 200mm fan on the inside of the case chassis vs the outside? Also, the panel with the power/usb switches is on the top, is there a way to relocate it? Anyone have any ideas?

Looks like it's possible that that whole plastic housing on the top could be removed. IDK what you'd have left to work with after you did it though. Up to you to find out. Easy to find ports panels to fit five or three inch drive bays. Provantage.com is still selling them for $86.80 + sh.

You can remove the top, it's only held by a couple of clips. Just undo them. There might be something else you need to snap, but it's not too strong. My friend has an Antec 900. I don't think the 200mm fits inside though, the motherboard runs right up to it almost.

Hey zepper, I have the case already, so I don't need to buy one at provantage. Can you elaborate on what you said about port panels? Do you mean something that actually has power switches and such? If there was something like that that fit into a 5in drive bay, that would be sweet.

Thanks for the tip, MotF, I found a pic with the top plastic part off here:

The fan might need some cutting to make it fit under, I'll try playing with it if I have time this weekend. Anyone have any ideas on what to do with that front chunk of metal that will be missing from the top of the case?

Most of the panels I've seen don't have the switches, but it would be very easy to add a couple of momentary contact switches to it. Take the wires with connectors from the antec panel and solder them to the new switches. This place has a customizable panel - put in whatever you want: http://www.frontx.com and most places have the silverstone ports panels for 3.5" bay and the silverstone 3 to 5" bay adapter. Or you can find more elaborate ones with ports plus flash card readers/fan controllers, etc. Every popular reseller here carries bunches of them.

Or maybe you could find the original stacker panel as a replacement part.

Silverstone Ports Panel/Flash card reader:

Or just the ports panel for lower cost:

Silverstone Bay Adapter:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999043 - you could mount the switches on this part.

Lian Li has a similar bay adapter too. But if you're not using your Antec floppy bay adapter for anything else...

Look around for best prices - seldom found at the Egg any more. I could see a couple of those military-style safety switch covers with the pushbutton switches inside flanking the ports panel. Triple kewl!
