Modding a case for LAN: wheels, retractable handle

Okay here's my idea, although I'm sure thousands out there probably thought of this before(as with most mods):

Mod a case by adding a suitcase's wheels to the bottom and handle to the backside, so that all you have to do is push/pull it around instead of carrying with a strap. The only problem I see is attaching the handle with something strong enough to be permenantly attached, and bottom support extending from the handle for the rig so that it'll tilt up on one side when pulled/pushed.

Or I guess one could build a computer into a suitcase, although that will probably be more of a pain in the ass.

I would attempt this, if I had power tools. Sadly, I don't even own a power screwdriver. Maybe there's a site that sells these mods.....

I'd guess your biggest enemies in a setup like that would be vibration and shock.

Unless you're wheeling over perfectly smooth floors, or have heavy-duty shock absorption (bike tires?) then pulling your computer around like luggage will transmit massive amounts of vibration through your case and components.

Generally not good.

If you decide to skip the wheeled route, one suggestion I don't have the resources to try, but would be kind of neat: get an old hiking knapsack (with the hard plastic or steel frame), do a little engineering, and make yourself a backpack computer. Unless your box is very large or very heavy, it would likely be a godsend for LAN parties.

Just a thought...

Good luck!

Yeah I was thinking some sort casing with a sound adsorbtion foam surrounding the inner casing between a inner framework and the suitcase. It's mostly for sound issues, but than again, it just might absorb shock as well.

It won't absorb nearly enough shock and vibration that would be caused by wheeling around. It will absorb some of the vibrations caused by the spinning of CD/DVD ROMs and HD's, but not the several G's of shock that can be generated by small bumps. You would really need some decent shocks on that case (even RC Cars have functional shocks, and they only weigh in at about 5 pounds, you need to have shock absorbers that will work on 40-50 pounds depending on your case).

Could always try something like this.

Better still... build your rig into the back of a go-kart and DRIVE it to LAN parties. Coolest rig in the room every time, guaranteed!

A friend of mine uses a mATX case that fits within a carryon suitcase with wheels and a retractable handle. I don't think he's had any problems with his hard drive. If you were to BYO for a large case, then check out your local hardware store for small pneumatic tires such as used on some hand carts/dollys. Those would be smaller and cheaper than those golf cart tires.

Of course you could just get a Shuttle mini system with a carrying bag.

That's what I was thinking. There are lots of barebone mini PCs out now. I've been thinking about getting one, but what would I need another one for? I don't do LAN or game parties. I would mainly get it for my wife. She likes them because they are "cute". Girls. Whaddya gonna do.

OTherwise you'll need pneumatic tires, not solid rubber or plastic rollers/casters. They will probably kill the HD after a few trips around the building.
