Modded Minecraft - What do I need to know to set up a server at home?

Myself and a couple friends (3 total players) pay a monthly fee to a hosting site so we can play a modded Minecraft (FTB Infinity modpack) world together. I have a desktop PC that is just sitting in a close currently (specs in sig) and I figure there would be less lag/expense if I just utilized that to run our server.

My question is, what are the steps needed to get that up and running?

Should I run Linux, or what OS should I run? Keep in mind I'm only familiar with Windows, but I imagine I can learn enough Linux, or whatever, to get a MC server up and running.

Any other tips?

Thanks in advance!

Linux would probably be the best way to go as its the least resource intensive OS and a modded MC package such as FTB infinity is going to take a fair amount of that 4 GB of RAM. Really all you need to get a modded server up and running is to install the OS, install the latest version of 64 bit Java and download the server modfiles. This is a pretty quick & easy guide on how to setup a modded server : http://forum.feed-the-beast.com/threads/johnleys-fast-and-easy-server-setup-guide.1290/

My 12 year old runs his own server on a 3770K/8GB RAM/Windows 7 rig at home. He does whatever else he wants while the server runs in the background. It must be easy, I guess.

It's pretty easy. I have only setup MC servers on Windows, so the following might differ in places for other OS's.

Download the Server file for the Modpack, put it in any directory you want, run the bat file, and you are pretty much good to go. You just have to connect to the proper LAN address(if it is on the same PC you will be playing MC, just use "LocalHost" as the address), your friends use your IP Address, as long as Port 25565 is open you are pretty much good to go.

Before continuing, open the Server Properties file and make sure that "WhiteList=True"

One exception is adding your friends to the White List. There's a White List file in your Server Directory. It used to be that simply typing your Friends Usernames in the White List was all you needed to do, but that was changed in more recent versions. I'm not sure what version of MC FTB Infinity uses, so first try to simply type there names into the White List file, each name on its' own line. If that doesn't work, in the Server Console type "/whitelist add Username" repeat for all Friends, that adds their names to the White List. If that doesn't work, it's because you are not recognized as Server Admin, so enter the following command in the Server Console "/Op YourUsername", then add your friends to the White list.

Here is a decent Wiki page that may or may not be useful

Used to host a server at home for my kids and their friends. Just got to be a pain and pointless to manage. Now we just use mcprohosting.com $2.50/month for hosting at the lowest level. All depends on how many users connect etc.
