Mod the hell out of the 335i or C6?

C6 all the way. You could still do minor stuff to the 335, but I'd keep it somewhat tame for the streets. It's already got a fair bit of power and you'll just want to use it all the time.

Besides you could always run the C6 on the street when it's nice out. Just a thought

Someone has run a 11.998 @ 124.4 with a catless downpipe, meth, and a good tune. With meth, nitrous, a tune, and slicks an otherwise stock car ran 11.33 @ 132.7

Both of those were JB3 cars and don't have nearly the options as the JB4, should be able to run even faster. Especially since youc an now do gear-dependent boost tuning for traction.

It's not rare to see BMW's at the drag strip down here turning 12-13 sec times or better.
 
So 5-7k for a nice used NA Miata to start with, and he's at $15k...

$8k for the swap and engine set is getting really lucky. IMHO most that have done it at this price have to be dealing with stolen stuff and more often than not have cut a ton of corners.

LS1 would drop the price a bit. LS2's are still really in demand with low mileage. Around here seeing an engine and trans for $5-6k isn't abnormal.

I'd say one would be hard pressed to do an entire nice clean build for under $20k.

It's more being Mr. Realistic than Picky though.

IMHO at nearly $20k you are better off getting the Vette to begin with than modifying a clown car.

Yep, if I am going that route I'd start with something like this. Having previously owned a C5, I know them in and out pretty well. Could rip out the seats and replace them with something... better. Install a cage and harness, fire extinguisher, etc. and you have a full blown N/A race car.

Hehe 🙂 That's pretty much what I was saying earlier, although that one's pretty decently built already. It just depends I guess on if you want another C5. Although I'd imagine owning a ~600+whp C5 in race setup to be a bit different than a DD C5 that's stock/near-stock.

Yeah, it's nearly impossible for me to recommend building your own C5, as long as the work was done by someone reputable you can always find one that has the mods that you want already on it and same thousands.

I think that makes a lot of sense economically, as time = money, and people are never (or almost never) able to get all the time/$ invested back out of a car.

On the flip side, some people probably have more fun rebuilding a car from the frame out than they do driving it.

It's not hard to find C5's that are under $25k with 500+ rwhp either NA of FI. It is hard to find one with the right brakes, interior, and suspension to match it. You get the best of both worlds, the most expensive stuff (drivetrain) is done, but you still end up building the track car you want.

The only reason I'm thinking C6 is because I've done the C5 thing and have a love/hate relationship with the car despite the fact that there's nothing better bang for the buck right now.
