mod rewrite help

i want the url 'x' to redirect to 'p.php?l=x' where x can be anything like home, help, contact, etc. how do i go about acheiving this using a mod rewrite in apache?

i tried:
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ p.php?l=$1

but when i try to echo $_GET['l'], i get p.php? what am i doing wrong?
