Many thanks for the heads-up, just ordered mine.

FYI, they seem to have fixed the $100 off breakpoint - you don't need to add anything to the order to get the discount, it comes up when you add the camera only to your cart

Another camera to consider is the DC4800EZ, it doesn't have the $100 rebate but comes with an extra battery and 64MB flash card as well as some other stuff.

Yep, this is a Kodak camera. I have one and its really nice, especially for the price.

I dont understand how the 4% eBates is $25.00 though ... You're paying $500.00 ... 4% of $500.00 is $20.00 not $25.00 ... Am I missing something here? .. Or does eBates pay you based on the original price of $600 and not after the "instant rebate" of $100? ... Just curious.

I'm considering getting this DC4800 digital camera but am somewhat concerned.

Anyone out there have any "case cracking problems" like the ones reported on Hawkeye's aforementioned link?

Reading about those cracked casings gets me very nervous. Someone please reassure me that you have not had this problem.

LiQiCE, you're correct. The ebates rebate is $20. Did this deal and got the confirmation from ebates within 2 weeks of the purchase.

THe photo forums have had a lot of buzz on finding cheap batteries for this camera. Can't say I've seen that discussed in this forum yet, but I'm sure I haven't read every thread here. Anyone have any suggestions?

LiQiCE...

You're right, ebates' rebate should be $20. Hawkeye's post was a "cut & paste" from earlier thread(s). Ebates used to offer a 5% rebate for PhotoAlley, but recently reduced that to 4%.

I've had the camera for about 2 weeks now and I haven't noticed any kindof problems with the camera cracking. It maybe a very isolated thing.

Thanks for the info on eBates too, I understand where the $25.00 comes from with the old 5% Rebate now :)

In terms of batteries, this thread (Link) discusses the Kodak expansion pack that includes a 2nd Li-Ion battery and a Quick Charger, although I read somewhere that I think the Toshiba Li-Ion battery is exactly the same as the Kodak one, except it is stronger (so it lasts longer), plus it is cheaper than the Kodak one. Maybe someone who reads this thread will remember the link for that thread that discussed alternative batteries.

I have had the camera since March. No problems with cracks, takes great pictures. I just got my $100 rebate a couple days ago too.

I got the expansion pack (camera bag, lens pen, extra battery, battery charger). You definitely want to get that. I also bought a 128 MB CF card for $75 a few weeks ago. The 16 MB CF card that comes with it can only hold about 30 pictures. Not too good if you are taking a lot of pictures and are not near a computer (like a long trip).

If you decide to get the expansion pack and extra 128 MB CF card, be ready to spend about $150 more.

The only complaint I have is the size. I wish it would comfortably fit in my pocket. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with the pictures quality or durability of this camera.

do you guys think the Fuji FinePix at PhotoAlley is a better deal? It's FinePix 4700 Zoom. 4.3 MPx with JPEG file format only. Price is $439.94 - $50 IR - $17.60 Ebates == $372.34 + tax. i need to do research on reviews of 4700.

This is a great camera and a good deal. YMMV, but I was able to get this camera two weeks ago at Staples B&M for $347 after PM, Rebate and Coupon

i just reread my post and realize how dumb that sounds... i meant kodak is still kicking it with the big boys overseas like canon, olympus, nikon, etc. afaik. i was wondering if someone was doing the manufacturing and kodak is providing the brand recognition

You can get really cheap DC4800 stuff at centre.net.au. That is an australian company... Here is my breakdown. I'm considering doing a big order for two batteries ($27.30 each), lens kit ($77), lens pen ($5), lens adaptor ($6 - note kodak sends you a free one but it can take months to get it)...

Centre.Net.Au AU $ US $

Kodak Lens Pen $ 10.15 $ 5.28
Kodak Lens Adaptor $ 11.76 $ 6.12
Kodak Lens Kit $148.50 $ 77.22
Kodak Battery $ 52.50 $ 27.30
Kodak Battery $ 52.50 $ 27.30

Shipping $ 42.00 $ 21.84

Total $AU/$US $317.41 $165.05

The australian currency is taking a beating compared to US so... People are also buying non-Kodak batteries that are rated at 1300mah compared to Kodak's 1100mah. Supposedly they are the same actual battery and that rating is choosen by the company selling the product based on their testing methods. So keep that in mind until someone proves the supposedly higher capacity battery really is higher capacity.

edit: Oh yeah, centre.net.au's website recently got defaced but they said that no customer information was comprimised. I posted the details over at dpreview.com in their Kodak forum. I have no reason not to trust them but keep it in mind. People on these forums here and at other photo forums (including dpreview.com) have ordered from centre.net.au so they do deliver.

edit2: this is all with 1 australian doller = 0.52 US dolars. I don't know if credit card companies charge to convert to different currency or not... Anyone?

I got mine about 2 months ago, and I just noticed small hairline cracks around the LCD and zoom, sending it to Kodak for fix. Other than that, the camera has been great.

I've had mine for months (when the price was still high:frown;) and have had no problem with cracks. I highly rec. the camera- although it is a little larger than I'd prefer, it is real comfortable to use- unlike the Olympus 3030, which I also considered- I think that camera is good only for a man's hand- I have relatively large hands for a woman, and I found the Olympus very bulky, while the Kodak holds comfortably.
I've rec. it to friends, who also have been happy with it- no problems.

I ordered from Centre.Net.Au, and my credit card company DID charge a surchage of a few %(3% I think). I understand that this is a standard practice. However, even with the surchage AND the shipping from Australia the price was still cheaper than buying in the US. I bought my lens kit for $90 US dollars including credit card surcharge. I couldn't find a cheaper price in the US. Also the service is fast. I had my order in about 1 week. I would order from them again!

I've never had my credit cards charge a fee for this. They do the conversion and you get the wholesale conversion rate which you be better than if you walked into the Sydney Airport and converted money.

Just like if you were travelling and charged the hotel room to your Visa.

stingygrrl,

I was told by a CSR from MasterCard that they do indeed charge a small fee fro doing the currency exchange. When I looked at my CC charge online it was a few dollars higher than I thought it should have been. I figured $178.xx US and the charge was $181.xx US(this was for 2 sets of lenses). I used yahoo.com currency converter to come up with my figure. So I called my CC co and the CSR told me that the do charge a few percent for the transaction. I was slightly bummed by this. But, I still got a great deal, less than $91.00 US delivered. I did a little research and found that the conversion fee is pretty common.

Have you also been sent a US customs bill for duty, and, if so, for how much? In the past when I received a shipment from overseas, FedEx sent me a bill for the duty charges a few weeks later, and I was wondering about this.

Haven't heard anything yet. The shipment was sent via Australian/US mail. So no FedEx/UPS involvement. A guy from another site ordered from Australia about 2-3 months ago and he has not received any bill yet either. I had read somewhere that there is a min. of $400.00 value before items subject to duties. I don't know if this is true. If I get a bill I will post.

Maybe it is just Mastercard.

Edit: Just got off the phone with Bank1 Visa. They also charge a 3% transaction fee. It is not broken down on the bill, it is just included in the charge amount for that transaction.
