Hey, I've been thinking about building my own case for a while now, and thought I'd post some idea's that I had considered in case any one else is interested.
First, I noticed that at many hardware stores you can purchase aluminum kick plates for doors that are (about) 8"x34" for around $12.
I thought this might be good for anyone building their own case who wants an aluminum front, as 8" is the typical width of a tower case.
Note that I have never tried this, and don't know how easy this stuff is to cut or, more importantly, whether it is safe to mount computer components to. I certainly would institute some type of protection for the electronics if I were to incorporate this.
Second, a lot of people talk about this chrome colored spray paint that looks awesome, but smears to looking terrible with just a little handling, and it turns gray when clear-coated. I wonder if you could paint it onto the back of acrylic so that you see the chrome color through the plastic, but the exposed paint would be inside the case. I've seen a few cases painted this way, and it always looks cool, but no one has tried it with chrome-colored paint as far as I know. The major questions here would be whether the paint can be applied to acrylic without damaging it, how it would look from the other side, and whether handling on the back would affect the appearance through the acrylic.
I wasn't planning on using either of these, but I thought you guys would be interested.

Just a few ideas that i had tossed around. If anyone tries/has tried these, reply so we can hear the results.

I wouldnt worry about messing up any component with the aluminum because almost every case has the components mounted to some kind of metal. Also you can buy auto paint from any store that would look really shiny and would be quite durable. (maybe you could wax it to get it REALLY shiny;))
