I just read that the AGP 6200 cards due out any day now are modifiable to 6600 6600GT by unlocking the 4 locked pipes!

here's the first article I read: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=21133
An interesting review at GZeasy. The Unika Geforce6200 graphics card. Unika as far as I remember is a computer manufacturer, not unlike Gericom and the likes. The article which is simplified chinese gives you some serious hint on how to mod your 6200 card to a 6600 card at the very least and to a 6600GT with some luck. Now if that is possible on those dirt cheap 6200TC, it would be a very good deal indeed.

I did a google and read some more but nothing definite. Anyone have details??

Interesting, there is some scuttlebut over at VRZone forums, but everything is going back to the GZeasy article. Nothing concrete yet.

Unless the 6200 (NV43) has GDDR3 memory, it would not turn into a 6600GT (NV43) after doing the unlocking procedure.

It would be a 6200 (NV43) with 8 texture pipelines and 3 vertex shaders.

It would still have the memory limitations imposed by having DDR ram.

At best, it would be like getting a 6600 (NV43), not a 6600GT (NV43).

The 6200TC line is a new processor, the NV44. I believe it is hardware limited to 4 texture pipelines... Here's some info from a review...

While the normal GeForce 6200 is based on the NV43 graphics processor (GeForce 6600) with four of the eight pixel pipelines as well as the "Color Compression" feature deactivated, Nvidia actually created a new processor (NV44) for the GeForce 6200 TurboCache. To keep the transistor count down, the NV44 only has four pixel pipelines to begin with. Like the NV43, this processor also comes with three vertex shaders, but only two ROPs (Raster Operation Pipes) instead of four.

I got a eVGA 6200 with 550 MHz ram and this thing runs like a beast on steroids! I unlocked the additional pipes and got to overclock a bit, here are my results:
3DMark05 score and overclock numbers
That's my max stable artifact free overclock, I'd wager to say I could go a little bit further, but this is about it. Simply a great budget card!

Edit: this is for a PCI-E card, not AGP. I have heard that AGP people have not been so lucky thusfar. Good luck if you decide to try this.

I ordered the Leadtec 6200 AGP the other night from Newegg. I should have it tuesday. I'll see if the pipelines can be unlocked and get back here with the info.
