hi, i've gone through two motherboards now (asus k8x and gigabyte k8vt800pro). initially, the first motherboard seemed DOA as it would not give me any video, or response whatsoever ( no system speaker beeps if i left out ram, etc. ) so I decided to try another board. installed the chip, ram, video, booted. all was well, got to the bios.

next issue was getting xp installed, had an sata drive. was rebooting to figure out some bios settings, rebooted a few times. sooner or later, my computer became unresponsive upon trying to boot it, a similar issue between two completely different motherboards. the only thing that I could think of was that I had read in my manual that if you have an sata drive to plug it into the ide1 channel instead of ide0, so I did that, and my problems came flooding in. the cdrom is a mutt brand (rosewill). i have the same issue again - my motherboard is not responding at all. the ram is completely out, and no post beep, no video at all.

are both these motherboards dead or what is the issue?

any help is greatly appreciated as I am trying to get this computer off to college with me

the first one i had was a powmax 400w, 2nd one is a chiefmax 450w, after about 15 minutes the powmax started smelling funny and the computer turned off. i assumed that it croaked, so i got the chiefmax.

new info however: after letting it sit all last night its booting again to video, could something on the motherboard be overheating? the cpu fan didnt feel hot to me, but maybe the thermal compound isn't transferring well?
