First off, i have noticed in the past that some people just cannot control themselves and they just HAVE to be rude. If you are that type, DONT post here, i dont need or want your help that badly. NO thread-crapping or any other neg or rude comments here please, i am asking IN ADVANCE. All others, please go ahead with any ideas or info you can come up with. thank you.

By now, i shouldnt have to be asking for help, but I have tried and failed. I have 2 identical socket 423 P4 mobos and i cant get them to boot. They are Intel D850GB. I have been to the Intel site and checked around. There is plenty of info but its sparse in the area of troubleshooting.

I have tried 2 different sets of rdram, they are 64mb Samsung. I have tried with 1 set and blanks in the vacant ram slots as needed, and with all 4 sticks of ram in. I get nothing at all with all 4 identical sticks of ram installed, i get the ps running and thats all when i have 2 x 64mb rambus in the first 2 slots and the dummy sticks in the other 2 slots.
I have tried 2 different s423 cpus, both cpus are the correct ones, and, as far as i know, they only fit in one way so you cant go wrong there? 1.3 and 1.4 mhz 400-256 i believe, whatever it is they are the correct ones, i double-checked on that.

I get a light in the middle of the mobo when the power supply is attached, but even the fan for the cpu wont go on. The only thing that turns on is the ps, which is a known-good enermax 430 watt. The monitor stays amber with this setup but it works with other machines i have here, so its not the monitor.
I have switched ram, power supply, vid card, and i get the same results, the green power light goes on on the mobo and the ps runs, but the monitor stays amber and no bootup.
The heatsink/fan is well-connected with thermal paste and connected in the correct place as per the manual. If i move the connector for the processors hs/fan to another connector, the fan will turn on, so its not the fan. Also, the cpu doesnt even heat up, so its not getting power i believe. I could be wrong about this though.

The mobo requires not only the main power connector but the 4 pin and the other, new pentium 4 connector and i have all 3 of them hooked up correctly, you cant hook them up wrong anyway, lol.

I have the mobo out of the case as this is a new build. I do charity work and that is what these units are for, they go to schoolkids who dont have a puter at home, so any help you can give would be appreciated. I should be able to trouble-shoot this by now but i cant!

I have tried to re-set the bios by taking the battery out and shorting posts 2 and 3 overnite. I also did what the manual said and tried to boot with the 2 jumpers shorted.

The mouse and keyboard and monitor are all known good.
I do have another machine that i can test the ram on but i would bet its good.
As for booting up, i have a test bench setup with a switch from an old case so i am good there and and know the correct pins and the switch is connected properly as the ps turns on from that switch.

I hope someone out there can give me the clue that will lead to getting these mobos running.

In the meantime i am working on another s 478, that one booted first time out, so we know again that the keyboard, mouse, vid card, and monitor are all good! The prob is with the mobo, ram, cpu, or the dummy sticks. I have a question about the dummy sticks Do they have to be a certain type? I have a pair that really only look like 2 pieces of plastic with no circuitry in or on them. I also have, which didnt come with this setup, a rambus "crimm". This crimm does have circuitry on it and it didnt come with this mobo, i am just wondering about it. Im not sure that the other 2 dummy pieces i have actually came with this mobo or not, and if i have to have certain specific types is really what i am wondering about. The manual is sparse in that area, just says i have to have dummys in vacant spot, not any particular type.

Can anyone help me out?

thanks

Nork, Have you tried any version of different Bios on the board/s ? I remember quite a while back with problems as to the intel boards and willamettes, and a certain bios or bios/s if you will wouldn't boot. It could also be a jumper on the board, that is either wrong, or missing.

Viet, thanks, but i have been thru all of that from the Intel site.

64 MB Samsung MR16R0824BN1-CK8IN 128 4 Non-ECC -That is the rdram i have that is listed.
1.4 GHz 400 MHz 256 KB P05 or greater - That is the supported cpu i am using, i tried the 1.4 and the 1.3.

I cant get the monitor screen so i have no idea of what bios is presently installed, nor can i install a newer bios with no monitor working.

64 MB Samsung MR16R0824BN1-CK8IN 128 4 Non-ECC -That is the ram i have and it is specifically on Intel's list of supported rdram.

Please, dont post to this thread any longer. I am going to let it die and then re-post. I dont think people are going to take the time
to read thru all the stuff that was posted by one person. I have asked him not to post in my threads in future so i would like to let this die and repost. I did point out that i knew about the info at the Intel site quote " I have been to the Intel site and checked around. There is plenty of info etc"

thanks

Well, I think your problem may lie with the HSF. Most boards won't post if they do not detect a working HSF on the CPU header, and you said the CPU HSF did not run when plugged into the correct header. Perhaps the CPU FAN header doesn't like that particular fan?

I think if the CPU fan does not run, it will not boot.

Maybe try different HSF's?
