Hi everybody ! :D
Must get a new MoBo. Will get an Intel 815 for a new system which is going to be used for programming only. I'm not a very experienced progr. so I don't know if it matters much what kind of a MoBo you have. Thinking of getting the one with Sound, Graphics and Network integrated on the MoBo. Anyone know if this is good or a bad idea. Any problems..with these..?

Most intergrated motherboards really suck in terms of performance. But it's cheap. If you can afford more, get something better. Otherwise an intergrated board is fine for simple needs, like programming.

Your prgramming with vb, c++ or what? I guess the integrated stuff would be fine unless you were going to make some graphic intense stuff. If I were you I would get a duron system if you are going to need a new mobo anyways. You can get a full integrated board for $85 plus shipping. You can get a duron for around $40.

Sound? sure if you're not doing any critical listening. But as far as onboard modem and graphics......they stink!! I went and bought a seperate modem because w/ the onboard modem, Ijust could'nt stay connected. Usually, also, when you get integrated everything, you ususally don't get many open slots.....hence, not much room for changing your mind later or upgrading.

Hi
I'm programming VB and C++. Will use a PIII 733Mhz processor. Not really going to do any graphics programming for quite some time. I also have a system with dual processors 2*800Mhz PIII, and was thiking of using that for graphics. But if I want a better graphics card couldn't I just switch the graphics off in the Bios.? and then just install a separate graphics card. the same for sound and whatever...? What do you think..?

If you play on turning off the onboard sound and video...which always suck anyway.. then don't get the integrated model. Motherboards with integrated features usually cost a little more. If you are ever going to be working with graphics I would recommend getting a motherboard and seperate video card.

Intel is also a bit more expensive then AMD right now.. and doesn't show any significant performance differences. I'd recommend a non-integrated motherboard with a duron/thunderbird depending on your budget. Stay away from onboard sound or video for anything you want to be half-decent quality.

I don't have any first hand experiences with integrated network cards so I can't comment on that.

Hi again..
I already have the PIII 733Mhz processor. I have two puters now. Want the other system for programming. I'm not an experienced progr. so I mess things up with subclassing and the like. Therefor this separate system. I want something stable and I believe MSI MoBos are. I was just thinking that the integr. stuff would perhaps all of a sudden start to interfere in some way, while using the system. Where network card are concerned I believe there are really no issues. My reason for thinking of getting the one with the full "works", that way I can start using the system directly. Later when I can afford it, the issue of money here, I would get a better graphics card. BUT, if the rest of all these things are not going to work nicely together and give me a stable system,....well then I will have to rethink again..
