Real, proper AGP and real PCIE can only be done with the ULi M1695 on the AMD platform, and with the VIA KT880pro on the Pentium-4 front. The former has PCIE 16x and AGP 8x, while the latter has just PCIE 4x but still proper AGP 8x.

Boards with the ULi solution aren't there yet, but the VIA chipset is. E.g. the below ECS board, which lets you extend your indecisiveness by supporting either DDR or DDR2 memory.

Everything else is just pretend-AGP, with 3.3V signalling and done from the PCI bus. Compatibility is limited to old AGP cards that can still do this "0x" mode. Cards that only do 4x/8x AGP but no 0x/1x/2x can't.

wow, fascinating read guys. i guess this means that waiting for uli boards to come out is the best solution for me. any word on when they'll be out and whether they will be reasonably priced?
