Hey all. I am getting rdy to switch out a mobo for the 1st time. Taking out a MSI 815e w\ a P3 933 256 sdram & putting in a MSi-6339 P4 1.4 w\ 256 rambus in. All my other componets will stay the same hard drive, snd crd etc. The P3 933 was my 1st build & now this 1 will be my 1st switch out of mobo's. I know I have to switch the snd crd, nic, vid crd over etc. My question is when I get all the items onto the new brd & get rdy to power it up for the 1st time with it in is there anything special I have to do? My hard drive alrdy has Win98se on it & I don't want to do something that will loose the data thats on there. I'm just asking in advance to make sure I don't do something wrong. What steps should I take if the above isnt correct? Thx for the help.:D

This should be a fairly easy swap.
I'd first go into the Win98se device manager and remove all of the
system devices except for PNP BIOS.
Then shut down the PC, swap the MB and cards, and restart the PC.
Win98se should reinstall the MB system devices.
Now Win98se probably will need the updated INFs that should have
come with your new MB.........

I think that would leave behind any chipset drivers and such wouldn't it? Try deleting the enum folder under hk local machine in the registry just before swapping. This eliminates all hardware items. I did this on my last swap and it worked great! I reinstalled Win98 on the system and it found all the old hardware again.

An athlon systems you can often just swap it out and it will work. Pentium systems tend to be more picky abotu drivers or something, I dunno.

But it is best do clean out before you swap out as the others suggested.
