I had a very bad week. Video card died, motherboard, PSU. In that order. I think the bad mobo blew out the video card and then the PSU. Anyway, people tell me that other components may well have been damaged.
I put in my spare mobo and installed Windows XP Pro, but next morning the machine started acting screwy again. This was using my other PSU, which tests good, although it was the original in the blown system. I figure there's a good chance that the problem is the DDR, which I have not tested yet or switched. The suspicious DDR is two sticks of Samsung Crucial 512 MB PC2700.
Right now I'm using my backup system, which has an Epox 8K7A mobo and 2 sticks of 256k PC2100. The mobo supports PC1600/PC2100. Can I test the PC2700 in this mobo with memtest86? I'm just trying to get a fix on why my main system isn't working. Yesterday morning it suddenly wouldn't post. I got multiple beeps and I cleared CMOS, which fixed it the day before (before I installed XP), but now it won't post at all.
