Mobo/Ram Questions

Hi,
Few questions about mobo/ram. If I were to be getting a motherboard with 3 ram slots and this mobo supported dual channel what would be the best thing to do? 2x1gb or 3x1gb? Would 3 be a bad idea?
Also would I notice a difference in gaming from going to a amd xp 2400+ to a xp 3000+ and from 512mb to 2gb of ddr 400?

2 X 512MB is the sweet spot right now. If/when more was usefull (which isn't now at least for gaming) you could add a third stick of one gig and remain in DC with 2 gigs.

Doom 3 shows a benefit in having a 3200+ over a 2500+ cpu. Presumable other new games will as well. Think about getting a mobile Barton 2600+ cpu. They're prolly cheaper at about $100 than a 3000+ amd cpu and I haven't yet heard of one that won't reach 3200+ speeds easily. Plus they run cooler using less vcore than their desktop counterparts.

Mobile 2600 (get IQYHA) can be had at excaliberpc.com and they guarantee the steppings.
