Mobo/Ram compatability question

Morning All,

I usually consider myself reasonably PC literate, but this has got me totally stumped.

Given how cheap components are at the moment, I thought now was a good time to pick up some nice cheap Ram and storage. Ta-da! 8gb of ram and 1tb hard disk ordered and arrived for under £100 (which is decent in the UK - I know the rest of the world can get that for the price of a Happy Meal, but we can't).

Anyway, hard drive works fine, but upon inserting the Ram the system wont even POST. All I get is a continuous bleeping, which my motherboard manual reports as a power error, but its got to be the ram. I swapped back to the old ram and everything works fine.

Now obviously before ordering, I made sure my MoBo was up to spec. It can indeed handle 8gb of ram at 800mghz, which is what I've ordered. So what the hell is the problem I think. I jump onto the Gigabyte (my mobo manufacturer) website, look up the model and fine a list of approved ram suppliers. Now as it happens, the new Corsair Ram I've ordered isnt listed on there.

To be honest, I'd always considered these lists of approved Ram as BS, and that if your ram matched the spec of your mobo, you'd be ok whoever the manufacturer of the ram itself. However, I may have just proved myself a noob as I damn well cannot get this ram to even POST when the system is running.

Does anybody have any ideas, and telling me that I am a noob and approved ram is absolutely a factor is an acceptable answer.

As a little extra info, I am not running any overclocks, my mobo is set to automatically set the voltage on the ram (and in any case, I can't even get to bios with the new ram inserted). I'm also running Vista 64.

Any help much appreciated

Well seems to me that you have done some of your homework but I am thinking this might be your problem: voltages/timings. They might need more voltage than your previous memory. Try this, leave your original ram in and go into bios and set the voltage to what your new Ram voltage requires. Also, set your timings to be 5-5-5-15, save and shut off. Then Remove all your memory, insert 1 stick and boot up. If boots, get into bios, make sure you set your voltages/timings again to what your ram requires. Save and reboot.

If you have Memtest to test your ram, use it on each stick to make sure your memory doesnt have errors.

Just a quick note, Since you are going to run 8gb of ram, it may require more voltages and other adjustments to run as it adds a bit more stress to the NB so you might have to consider running tests to make sure its stable.

This is just a suggestion and may be complete BS, but may be you could try updating the BIOS to the latest version. I would personnally only do this as a last resort once you have tried all other avenues.

Thanks Daw. I havent but that's my last resort also tbh as I'm not too confident doing it. If all else fails, I'll give it a try

Thanks!

If you do update the BIOS, have a look on the'net for reviews for that BIOS version, because I know for my MB (GA-X48T-DQ6) there was a BIOS update which killed quite a few MBs.

Here I googled it for you so you can download it, burn to a CD and use it as you boot your PC. Memtest
