I currently have the following old cheapy system :

Athalon XP 2000
ECS mobo (AGP 4x)
9800 AIW Pro
1 gig 2100 Ram

I currently play BF2 with 800 X 600, all low settings, with a decent frame rate. It looks like crap but very playable. The computer is fast enough for everything else I do on it.

Is there an AGP card out there that would significantly boost performance for this game or will my mobo and proc be a bottleneck?

It's either that or spend $1300 on a whole new system.

your proc will be a bottleneck

& if you spend 1300 on a whole new system...you'll have a badass rig on your hands ;)
$1300 buys a LOT of computer now a days

I have been itching to buy a new system but with all the changes in hardware & prices this summer I have been playing a wait a see game. The system I am looking at is

E6600
Gigabyte DS3
X1900XT
2 gigs Corsair XMS2
etc.

What started me thinking about the upgrade was BF2142. But then I realized that I would be spending $1300 for a video game :) Ouch! But hell, it's only money :)

yes, but its obvious you don't upgrade that often, so this purchase will last you for a while ;)

I know how that must feel, I recently went from a XP 2100+ to a 64 3000+ and Quake 4 plays much smoother this time, and I still use my vanilla geforce 6600. how about getting a XP 3000+?
